Doug Ulman, DCLG ChairWelcome to the Web site for the 2006 Listening and Learning Together: Building a Bridge of Trust, a Summit for the cancer advocacy community hosted by the NCI Directors Consumer Liaison Group (DCLG). On the campus of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), representatives from all segments of the cancer community convened to give their constituents a strong voice and to help shape future interaction and collaboration between NCI and the community.

The DCLG invited advocates to join their peers from around the country on June 19–20, 2006, for a unique opportunity for interaction and candid conversation with each other and with NCI and NIH leaders. The role of advocates in the work of NCI is crucial to implementing initiatives and accomplishing the shared vision of eradicating the suffering and death due to cancer. By participating in the Summit and engaging in meaningful dialogue with NCI staff and others in the patient advocacy community, advocates have joined us as we take important steps in realizing this vision.

Mary Jackson Scroggins, Summit Working Group ChairThe DCLG planned two activity-filled days during which advocates learned about NCI and each other, enhanced NCIs understanding of their organizations and constituencies, shared experiences and insights, and discussed the future of cancer research. Presenters ranging from NCI leadership to participants in NCI clinical trials offered a variety of perspectives. We were especially excited about the Poster Picnic, which gave us all a chance to learn about the innovative programs that community organizations have created around the country.

The Summit, dedicated to the memory of former DCLG Executive Secretary Nancy Marie Caliman, was designed to be interactive and to include broad representation from the entire cancer community, with special attention on organizations that work with the medically underserved. And, although registration was free, we were happy to have the support of the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) to provide scholarships to qualified advocates who applied.

This Web site provides detailed information on the Summit and will be updated. If you have questions about the Summit, this Web site, or the DCLG, please contact James Hadley in the NCI Office of Liaison Activities at (301) 594-6831 or liaison@od.nci.nih.gov.

Thank you for your interest in the Summit.

Best wishes,

Doug Ulman, DCLG Chair
