NIH Campus ToursTours of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus were available to registered attendees on June 19. The first day of the summit, June 19’th participants chose one of the following tour options: The bus left at 8:30 a.m. and returned to the Natcher Conference Center at 12:00 noon. Tour #1 NIH Clinical Center and the Children’s InnThe NIH Clinical Center is the world’s largest medical research facility encompassing more than one million square feet. Community physicians all around the country refer almost 10,000 new patients each year for state-of-the-art treatment or to participate in clinical trials. NIH researchers have reached significant milestones in cancer care here, including the first cure of a patient with a solid tumor with chemotherapy, the first chemotherapeutic cures for childhood leukemia and Hodgkin’s disease, and the first use of immunotherapy. The Children’s Inn provides a comfortable and supportive environment for a family to stay in while their child is being treated at the Clinical Center. At the end of the treatment day, a child can leave behind the IV drips, needles, nurses, and doctors and return to the comforting presence of his or her family and the Inn’s caring staff and volunteers. The Inn has operated 24 hours a day since it opened in 1990 and has been home to nearly 6,000 seriously ill children and their families. Tour #2 NIH Campus Bus Tour and the National Library of MedicineThe NIH campus covers 350 verdant acres and contains 75 buildings, whose 2,600 laboratories support 6,000 scientists as they conduct cutting-edge research. The 27 Institutes and Centers of NIH attract the top researchers from all around the world in many fields of medicine, including talented young scientists. The National Library of Medicine is the world’s largest medical library. Its collection consists of more than 7 million items in all areas of medicine, including one of the world’s finest collections of old and rare medical works. In addition to reading rooms, the library’s public programs include regular exhibits and an extensive collection of online resources accessible at www.nlm.nih.gov.
