Scholarships

The deadline for scholarship applications has passed.

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Director’s Consumer Liaison Group (DCLG) worked vigorously to ensure access to the Summit for as many advocates as possible regardless of their financial circumstances. To achieve this goal, the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH) and NCI provided a limited number of scholarships.

Minorities and those representing underserved populations were especially encouraged to apply for scholarships, if needed. Applications were reviewed, and scholarship recipients were notified by May 12, 2006.

The goal was to award funds to applicants who:

  • Demonstrated a financial need and would not be able to participate in the Summit without financial assistance;
  • Were capable of and committed to sharing their knowledge gained at the Summit with those served by their organizations; and
  • Were willing to submit a poster abstract/summary. (Poster abstracts were not required for scholarship applications but were strongly encouraged.)

To qualify for a scholarship, applicants had to:

    1. Fill out the entire scholarship application.
    2. Be a member of a cancer advocacy or community organization.
    3. Provide a letter of support from their organization’s leadership.
    4. Agree to participate in all Summit activities and share their experiences from the Summit with the constituency served by their organization.
    5. Live more than 50 miles from the NIH campus.

To be considered, applications had to include:
Part I: A completed application form.
Part II: A signed letter of support from an advocacy or community organization.

General Information

Part I: Scholarship Application Form
The scholarship application form could be completed online or sent via e-mail.

Part II: Letter of Support
A letter of support written by a leader in the applicants advocacy or community organization and briefly describe the applicant's role within the organization was submitted as part of the scholarship application package.

Poster Abstract/Summary
Submission of a poster abstract/summary was encouraged (but not required) with the scholarship application package. Poster abstracts/summaries were to be no more than 250–300 words and describing the applicants organization; type, size, and composition of its constituency; mission; goals; and any programs the applicant wished to highlight. Please review specific poster abstract/summary instructions and requirements.

Notification Process
All applicants were notified via U.S. mail, fax, or e-mail by May 12, 2006.
